ALP to Partner with Quantum in Southern California Plug-in Hybrid Demonstration Project
Vancouver, BC, Canada – Advanced Lithium Power, Inc (ALP) will provide Lithium-Ion battery packs, battery control technology, and vehicle integration services as part of a Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies (NASDAQ: QTWW) contract with South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) to develop and demonstrate plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). Quantum and ALP will develop, manufacture, and deploy 20 Ford Escape PHEVs for demonstration in Southern California. The contract value from AQMD to Quantum\ALP amounts to $2.1 million US.
The PHEV system will be based on integrating an ALP lithium ion battery pack and associated control and thermal management systems into the 2008 Ford Hybrid Escapes. ALP’s PHEV battery system will be designed to achieve a target of 35-40 miles of battery-only range. Extensive analysis and testing, including vehicle crash testing as well as fuel mileage and emissions performance, will be completed on the Ford Escape PHEVs prior to the field demonstration to ensure the safety, performance, and reliability of the vehicles.
The AQMD has been a leader in developing and demonstrating plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) for over six years because of the potential for this technology to enable zero-tailpipe emissions for portions of the driving cycle. Similar to commercially available hybrid-electric vehicles, PHEVs utilize a battery pack and an electric motor in concert with an internal combustion engine. PHEVs, however, employ a larger battery pack which can be designed to extend the electric portion of the driving cycle, providing improved fuel economy, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and reduced petroleum dependence. The larger battery pack can also be fully recharged from electrical sources external to the vehicle, so a charger, plug, and energy management system will be integrated into the vehicle. PHEVs can provide substantial benefits to communities, neighborhoods, and schools where these vehicles operate. AQMD’s draft 2007 Air Quality Management Plan calls for 100,000 PHEVs by 2014 in the South Coast Air Basin and up to one million PHEVs by 2020. PHEVs represent one of the measures needed to meet the aggressive air quality goals and deadlines required by U.S. EPA. The AQMD also believes PHEVs can be an enabling technology for all types of alternative fuels, such as CNG and hydrogen, by reducing the size of the most costly components (e.g. gaseous storage tanks and the fuel cell stack) and relying more heavily on the battery system.
“This contract provides ALP with a unique opportunity to showcase the performance of our advanced lithium ion battery systems in a PHEV application,” said Lorne Gettel, President and CEO of Advanced Lithium Power. “We are particularly pleased to be working with Quantum and the AQMD on an innovative program to reduce smog-forming pollutants, reduce global warming emissions, and reduce fossil fuel consumption in Southern California. We believe PHEVs and our advanced lithium ion battery systems represent important technologies which can help address the critical issues of energy security and global warming with an enormous potential to penetrate today’s rapidly growing hybrid electric vehicles market.”
About AQMD:
AQMD is the air pollution control agency for all of Orange County and the urban portions of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. This area of 10,743 square miles is home to over 16 million people - about half the population of the whole state of California. It is the most populated urban area in the United States and consequently has significant air quality concerns. AQMD is responsible for controlling emissions primarily from stationary sources of air pollution. Since mobile sources are responsible for the majority of air pollution in Southern California, the AQMD supports a wide range of projects to help commercialize near-zero and zero-emission vehicle technologies including plug-in hybrids.
